Armchair Activism

Watson and Holmes would approve. Add a pipe for full marks.

It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of despair, venturing online as an activist. Horrendous actions you have no way of combating, vile opinions masquerading as common sense being pedalled by organisations with both reach and clout, constant small acts of aggression and cruelty from around the world – and what to do? Tweet about it, or sign yet another petition that’s making the rounds? Then feel powerless, because what can a small gesture like that really do?

Well, here’s a small gesture that really will do something good. Scottish Transgender Alliance, Trans Resource and Empowerment Centre, TransBareAll and Sheffield Hallam University are conducting research into the mental health and well being of trans people. It’s a desperately overdue survey, and one of the most respectful pieces of research into minority groups and mental health I’ve seen.

Cards on the table – it’s long. But you can do it from the comfort of a cosy chair – dare I say with a glass of wine in hand and your favourite music playing? You get to push the world just that one inch closer to being better, and you don’t even have to face the rain to do it. Please – fill it in here. And spread the word.
